Realistically there is no one quick fix, but there are myriad useful tips to increase your chances.

Weight loss tips: The colour of the plate you eat off can make a huge difference to your waistline

Dr Charles Spence, professor of experimental psychology, University of Oxford, told Business Insider:

“What you serve food on turns out to have more of an impact on our taste and flavour perception then I think any of us realise.”

White is one of the most common colours of plate for people to eat off, but it creates the most problems for our waistlines.

A 2011 University of Valencia study found eating off a white plate, as opposed to a dark version, made food taste seven per cent more sweet, nine per cent more enjoyable and 13 more cent more flavoursome.

Suggested explanations for this are that the white backdrop makes the food more visible, or triggers sweet food memories.

Weight loss tips: The colour blue is considered to have a calming effect and may suppress appetite

If you want to eat less and lose weight, you’re best off choosing a red or blue plate.

Dr Spence said: “Snack foods - unhealthy stuff on a red plate - you end up eating a little bit less because it's that red colour on a plate where it seems to trigger some sort of danger or avoidance signal.”

The colour blue is another good choice because it appears to work as an appetite suppressant on the brain.

Dr Brian Wansink, director of Cornell University’s Food & Brand Lab in the US, told Body and Soul: “If you tend to overeat carbs, don't put these meals on white plates. Try red, navy or black instead.”

Another study recently revealed the one common food to cut out of your diet if you want to lose weight.

Research from the Canadian Medical Association Journal found artificial sweeteners may be associated with long-term weight gain and increased risk of obesity.

Not only will they scupper your weight loss aspirations, they can also increase your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, according to the study.

Cutting foods high in these artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, neotame, saccharin and sucralose is one simply way to keep off the pounds.
