Half of micro-businesses feel rising cost of energy is a threat to their future

More than half of micro-businesses feel the cost of energy is threatening their future.

A survey of 500 firms with fewer than ten staff – including cafes, pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and shops – found that 71 per cent had been caught by 'unexpected terms and conditions such as crippling rates, inflexible payment terms, high deposits and extended contracts'.

Forty-five per cent had been asked to make large upfront payments, while 31 per cent said they were on a high tariff as they were deemed a credit risk.

One in five had been turned down by energy suppliers, the study from pay-as-you-go energy firm Utilita found.
