Jargon stops youngsters going for jobs: Two thirds of 16 to 24-year-olds failed to understand potential roles because of terms used in adverts

Youngsters are being put off applying for jobs because of impenetrable business jargon such as 'fulfilment service' and 'SLAs', a study has found.

Research among 16-to-24-year-olds showed that many were left unsure about the suitability of a job if they could not understand what was in an advert.

Two out of three of those questioned said they did not understand the role they would be applying for because of confusing job descriptions.

Some of the most confusing terms included SLAs (service level agreement), KPIs (key performance indicator) and procurement.

Many organisations 'talked up' roles, making them needlessly complicated or creating unrealistic expectations, said the report by Business in the Community and City & Guilds.

Grace Mehanna of Business in the Community, said: 'Understanding jargon is not a measure of a young person's potential or an indication that they are a better candidate.

'We're concerned that the prevalence of business speak in job adverts aimed at first jobbers is a major barrier that could inadvertently screen out young people without access to working role models and networks.'

A total of 80 young people rated the job descriptions of 65 companies for the report.
